Meal planning for beginners who hate meal planning
Short answer: plan only the dinners you will actually cook, three or four a week rather than seven. Choose them so they share ingredients, write one shopping list, and leave the other nights for leftovers, eating out or toast. A plan you follow beats a perfect plan you abandon on Wednesday.
Most meal plans fail for the same reason: they are written for an ideal week, not a real one. Here is the version for people who do not like spreadsheets.
Five steps, about fifteen minutes
- Count your real cooking nights. Look at the week ahead: late shifts, dinners out, the night you will be too tired. Usually that leaves three or four.
- Pick one new recipe and two or three you know. Novelty is fun once a week. The rest should be dishes you can cook half-asleep.
- Make them share ingredients. If one recipe uses half a bag of spinach, pick another that uses the other half.
- Write one shopping list, grouped by aisle. Fresh, chilled, pantry, frozen. Check your cupboards before you go, not after.
- Do one small prep session. Twenty minutes on Sunday (wash greens, cook rice, chop onions) makes every weeknight shorter.
A sample four-dinner week
All of these are in Chef Drago. Spinach, tomatoes, rice and parmesan come back across the week, so very little goes to waste.
| Night | Dinner | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | One-pot creamy tomato, parmesan and spinach orzo | 25 min |
| Tuesday | Egg fried rice with veggies (cook extra rice on Monday) | 15 min |
| Thursday | Quick coconut curry with potatoes and spinach | 17 min |
| Sunday | Hearty jambalaya stew, with leftovers for Monday’s lunch | 40 min |
Common beginner mistakes
- Planning seven dinners. Life happens. Plan fewer and enjoy the bonus nights.
- Only new recipes. Every new dish takes longer and needs new ingredients.
- No backup. Keep one emergency dinner in the cupboard: pasta, a jar of sauce, a can of beans.
- Shopping without checking. Half your list is probably already at home.
Let the app plan it
Chef Drago has a weekly planner: you choose how many dinners you want, your budget and your goals, and it picks the meals and builds the shopping list. Your first weekly plan is free; more plans are part of the optional Star Chef subscription. For single nights, the swipe deck is still the quickest way to decide.
