What is a recipe swiping app?
Short answer: a recipe swiping app shows you one recipe card at a time. You swipe right to keep it and left to skip it, like a dating app for dinner. Instead of searching or scrolling long lists, you make quick yes-or-no decisions until a few recipes are left. Chef Drago is a free recipe swiping app for iPhone.
Swiping, searching or scrolling?
Each way of finding a recipe fits a different situation.
| You start with… | Effort | Best when… | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Searching a recipe site | an exact dish in mind | low if you know what you want | you already know you want lasagne |
| Scrolling lists and feeds | a vague idea | high: many tabs, long pages | you have time and want inspiration |
| Swiping recipe cards | nothing at all | low: one gesture per recipe | you have no idea and little energy |
Swiping works because each decision is tiny. You are never asked “what do you want for dinner?”, only “this one, yes or no?”. That is a much easier question at 7 pm.
What to look for in a recipe swiping app
- Filters before the deck: time available, meal type, number of people, difficulty, diet and allergies.
- Ingredient matching: the cards should tell you how much of your fridge each recipe uses.
- A way to finish: swiping alone can go on forever. Something has to turn a shortlist into one dinner.
- Real cooking help: steps, quantities and timers, not just a photo and a link.
- It learns: the deck should get closer to your taste as you swipe.
- Respect for your data: no ads following you around, no selling of your preferences.
How Chef Drago does it
- Easy recipes only, each with a photo, three words that describe it, difficulty, time, calories and budget.
- Right for yum, left for nope. Your yeses go on a shortlist.
- The duel: when two recipes are on your shortlist, they face off and you tap the one you would rather eat.
- Step-by-step cook mode with quantities, timers detected in each step and a timer on the lock screen.
- Drago, a little dragon chef, reacts to your choices. Tap him to pick, hold him to talk.
You can try the deck without installing anything on the home page, or read how it works screen by screen.
When swiping is not the right tool
If you already know exactly what you want to cook, a search engine will get you there faster. And if you love planning a whole week at once, start with a plan; see meal planning for beginners. Swiping shines on the nights you have no idea and no energy, which, for most of us, is most nights.
